In recent months the general mood is moving to the inevitable conclusion that nuclear energy will be needed in this country if we are to keep the lights on. This is because successive governments have made it so by the failure to develop any alternatives.
Now we have the hard statistics. In response to a parliamentary question by Michael Meacher the former environment minister it is revealed that the UK produces 1.3% of its energy needs from renewable resources. This compares with 41% in Sweden and 35% in Latvia. In fact in the list of European countries, Britain is third last; only Luxemburg with 0.9% and Malta with zero do worse. These figures are from 2005.
In spite of the hype and talk of producing a renewable energy based economy we’ve only increased from 1% since 1995.
