15th June - Overweight dogs now “the norm”

<<< Back

Simon Caulkin, writing in the Observer, quotes Harvard professor of philosophy Michael Sandel in his series of Reith lectures who says that norms matter because they become self-fulfilling.  At Burns we’ve been drumming on about this for ages in relation to the pets.   The overweight pet is now accepted as being normal and owners of lean dogs are being stopped in the street and asked why the dog is so thin. We even find that many vets are encouraging dog owners to get some weight on the dog.

I can’t live without a daily paper but on Sunday I get two, the Observer and the Independent.  That’s a large quantity of newsprint but it is getting harder to find something interesting in either.  The column I turn to first is the one on Management by Simon Caulkin.  He provides a voice of sanity in the business world but I see he’s being axed due to economic cutbacks in the media.  I may not be the Observer’s typical reader but I think that the newspaper’s own management haven’t been reading his column or they wouldn’t be firing him.

Flyball

A new flyball club is starting in Kidwelly.  It’s a branch of Merlin’s Magicans Flyball team and I’ve loaned them a field for a time for practice.  I went up yesterday to see them.  Holly, a Collie x Lab was having her first taste of the sport and she was learning how to jump the hurdles.  Looks great fun and I ‘m sorry I didn’t take it up with Lizzie.  She’s too old now.
The prize for the best name for a flyball team must go to the one in the Clyde Valley in Scotland.  What about Four Sprung Dog Technique for a title?  Anyone beat that?
