Dog Breeding; Dogs Today; Carrots for the nation

Dog Breeding
Remember that 2008 BBC programme about dog breeding and the Kennel Club?  Jemima Harrison, who made the programme, got a lot of stick at the time – it was unfair, underhand, inaccurate and so on.  At the time, the Kennel club complained to Ofcom that it had been unfairly represented, a complaint which was rejected.

Well the independent investigation commissioned by the Kennel Club and the Dogs Trust themselves into the whole question of dog breeding has just been unveiled and surprise, surprise, most of the criticisms made in the programme have been confirmed.

In the meantime, the Kennel Club had already revised its standards to exclude “anything that could …prevent a dog breathing, walking and seeing freely.”  Clearly they thought (before the programme) that breed standards which did encourage these defects were acceptable.

Sir Patrick Bateson who is the author of the report has called for a “non-statutory council on dog breeding.”  Let’s hope it’s NOT THE KENNEL CLUB.

Dogs Today
The February issue of Dogs Today is due out any day.  The Burns Penlan Farm range gets an honourable mention but the item says that it is available now.  Oops, we’re not quite there. Another week or two yet.

Carrots for the nation
Saturday’s Guardian reports that thanks to the bad weather there is a shortage of carrots and the situation is sufficiently critical that Gordon Brown has been informed.

I can help there.  We have about 60 tonnes in Penlan waiting to be lifted. If Downing Street sends a team of “howkers”[lifters], we could spare 50 tonnes to the nation.

Independent on Sunday
On December 21 I wrote about the Motoring Correspondent in the Independent on Sunday who was extolling the virtues of a £150,000 Ferrari with its 500+ BHP engine. Yesterday he was at it again.  This time it was a Bentley with similar engine size and price to match.  The Travel page was recommending the delights of a stopover in a hotel in Bangalore which was a snip at £350 for the night.  I’m clearly not a typical IoS reader.
