22th May - Convalescence, toxins and diet

<<< Back

When the diet is unsuitable, usually too much food or a low quality diet with chemicals and an excess of fats and protein, this causes a build up of toxic wastes in the system.
In the dog and cat the skin is often the first organ system to show symptoms i.e. some type of skin disease.  It is important to understand that a skin ailment is not just skin deep.  It is a  sign that the whole system is affected.
When this descent into disease is reversed by a new, healthier diet, the body starts to expel these accumulated toxins.  The blood clears first.  Then the body cells start to expel their stored waste products.  Think of being in a tunnel where the air is foul.  You breathe as little as possible.  Then fresh air comes along so you take a deep breath and exhale.  That is what the body cells do when the blood stream clears of toxins. This healing process can happen very smoothly with immediate, clear-cut benefits but sometimes it doesn’t.  A sudden unloading of toxins from the cells into the bloodstream can cause some adverse reaction, for example, high temperature, lethargy, weight loss.
It is even possible for the skin pigmentation to change.  I’ve seen white dogs turn pink, black dogs turn brown.
We need to remember that the animal is convalescing from a fairly deep seated malady which may call for a bit of sympathetic TLC.
An example of this came up recently.  A dog with skin inflammation was introduced to Burns Chicken and Brown Rice.  The skin cleared up but the dog lost weight.  The dog was having three hours of exercise a day and the owner wanted to change to Lamb and rice on the advice of her vet.  What is needed here is rest to reduce the demands on the system.
