I heard an interview on Radio 4 Today programme with Elaine Pendlebury, Veterinary Communications Director at the PDSA. The PDSA has published its annual obesity league table showing that obesity in dogs in the UK is increasing at an alarming rate. (I think we all knew this.) Ms Pendlebury talked a lot more sense than the Veterinary Director of The Dogs Trust who, as readers of this column will recall, recently wrote in the Guardian that dogs should be fed on what they liked best.
This prompted me to look at the PDSA website. Prominently featured were the Trustees of the PDSA who are described as “people from business and the arts”. There are 10 Trustees, all male, white, over 55, upper middle class (come to think it that applies to me too – except I’m working class of course). A good cross-section of society and exactly what is needed to empathise with the needs of underprivileged pet owners.
