Pets at Home; Mushers in Kidwelly; holiday homes

Pembrey Country Park is hosting a mushers’ race meeting this weekend and the competitors are camping at our office site.  We’re organizing a little soiree for Saturday evening. What I didn’t realise was that the dogs will be tethered outside and they howl.  And it’s a full moon.

Our new moist food factory is now in production although not yet in full flow as they iron out the glitches.  Hamish, Chris, Richard and Wayne have done a great job of learning a whole new business. As Hamish said “I didn’t think there would be so many teething troubles.”  I knew different.

Egg production from our hens has been very slow in recent weeks which was a worry that we would not have enough for the pet food.  The weather has been punishing and that is the price of being free-range.  The hens themselves are in beautiful condition and the number of eggs is starting to fly so we should be all right.

Richard our Farm Manager and Roger from FWAG (Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group) are putting up owl boxes today.  Roger is concerned that, after the severe weather, there won’t be any owls to house.

Business Section
The business pages of the Daily Blat tell us that Pets at Home has been sold by private equity group Bridgepoint to private equity investor KKR whose interests include Boots and Toys R Us. There was a Christmas boom in doggie bling and overcoats and sales at Pets at Home are up for the year despite the recession.  This suggests that the independent pet trade may be feeling the pinch and if we want to preserve our high street shops we need to support them.

On that note, The Llanelli Star ran two stories earlier this month.  On page 5(?) there was a big splash about a new free local bus service to Trostre Park, the out-of-town shopping centre.  On page 27(?) there was a little item about the disappointing Christmas suffered by the town centre traders despite the Llanelli Star campaign to support the town centre. Do you think the two could be connected?

Holiday Homes in Kidwelly
I don’t usually use this blog for selling so you may want to look away now.
Burns now has several beautiful, dog friendly holiday houses for rent, three in Kidwelly and one in Templeton, near Narberth in Pembrokeshire. You can find out about them on this website under “News” or go to www.burnsholidayhomes.com
