Women’s Darts
I’m not much for darts but last night my wife Tegwen and I were transfixed by the Women’s World Darts Finals on TV. My palms were sweating as one of the semi-finalists was Rhian Edwards who is from Kidwelly, no less. In fact she is the daughter of our neighbour Glyn at Penlan Farm and we at Burns gave her a little bit of sponsorship to go to the finals. She won her semi-final so we’ll be watching out for her in the final tonight.
The Secret Life of Dogs
I saw the programme, the Secret Life of Dogs the other night. The makers appeared to be aiming to show the dog as a much more cognitive creature than we realise. Everyone who has one, regards the dog as a family member but it is a mistake to treat the dog as an equal. Many behavioural problems stem from that. The programme featured a Collie in Austria which could recognise the names of over 300 objects. This was fascinating precisely because it is unusual. One scientist was quoted who said that it was domestication of the wild dog which changed humans from hunter-gathering to agrarian lifestyle. That sounds far-fetched to me, another example of a scientist who makes a small discovery which is used to make an unjustified conclusion.
