Penlan Isaf Farm

Other Livestock

At the moment, there are 11 pedigree Aberdeen Angus cattle. This consists of 4 cows which were purchased 2 years ago, plus their offspring, three yearlings and 4 young calves. The intention is to introduce other native and rare breeds of cattle and sheep. Tegwen Burns is keen to keep free range pigs as well.

Conservation

Penlan isaf lands consist of a several large fields of grassland which previously were intensively managed with few trees and very sparse hedgerows. New hedge banks have been constructed and planted with native species of hedge plants. In time, the large fields will be divided into smaller fields using new hedgerows. This will create windbreaks and provide cover and habitat for wildlife.

Penlan uchaf is more varied from a wildlife perspective. There are small areas of woodland and some small fields which cannot be cultivated so they are relatively undisturbed. There are also small watercourses.

Roger Mathias from the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) has been engaged as a consultant to advise on the conservation plans and report on progress.
